MICROSOFT WORD
Word is a computer program known as a "word processor" and is designed to perform the same tasks as a typewriter. However, Word's capabilities go far beyond that of a typewriter, allowing the user to create mass-mailing form letters, automated tables of contents for a document and automatically insert frequently used segments of text without typing.

"This was very helpful - I've needed a thorough introduction to Word, instead of trying to figure it out myself."
Overview
Word can be considered the "foundation program" of the Microsoft Office suite: many of its techniques and methods are found in the other Office programs. As a result, this is a good class for anyone with a working knowledge of Microsoft Windows but little additional computer experience. Students start by learning basic terminology and move on to create documents. Students leave the class ready to create, save, spell-check and print documents. Text manipulation - entering, deleting, changing, rearranging - is given significant emphasis and many shortcuts are described. Setting page margins, tabs and headers and footers are also covered.
Objectives
- Understand fundamental concepts: what is Word and why should I use it?, the cursor, line wrapping.
- Learn the basics: text entry and editing, working with files and selecting text.
- Understanding the environment: issuing commands, the interface, getting help.
- Make your documents look the way you want: formatting.
- Working with documents: basic document views, templates.
- Discuss the cut/copy and paste feature.
- Use the composition tools: spelling and grammar checkers, find and replace, thesaurus.
- Work with page layout and printing features: the Page Layout dialog box, headers and footers, print preview, the Print dialog box.
Prerequisite(s)
- Introduction To Windows
Or Equivalent Experience Using Windows-Based Computers

"I've worked with Word for about a year and do tables, etc. and I still learned a lot of new information."
Overview
The second course in the Word sequence includes an extended discussion of tables, used in creating documents with intricate, yet easy-to-use, layouts. Strong emphasis is also given to mail merges - documents used to create form letters and mass mailings. Word's tool set includes a useful feature for creating forms that can be filled-out electronically or on paper and these tools are covered in detail during this full day course. At the conclusion of the class, students know how to create standardized "master" files, called templates, that allow the same file to serve as the same starting point for many documents.
Objectives
- Cover useful tips and techniques: AutoCorrect and AutoText, comments, paste special and others.
- Understand tables: create and modify them and use more advanced options.
- Build forms: create documents to be filled-in electronically or on paper.
- Save templates: create standardized "master" documents for repetitive use.
- Discuss mailing features: labels and envelopes.
- Create personalized form letters with mail merge.

"New ideas to improve my overall job performance."
Overview
Student questions often guide the content of this full day class. Topics covered in the Introductory and Intermediate and classes are sometimes re-examined in greater detail to answer questions or solve problems. Discussion of the system used to structure a Word document provides insight into other tools used in the class, such as styles, a powerful feature that allows quick application of formatting. The outlining tools allow users to easily organize a document by topic and, if necessary, number items in a hierarchical system. Fields, briefly introduced in the Intermediate class, are given a thorough inspection, with several examples demonstrating the power they can bring to a document.
Objectives
- Discuss Word's "three layer document system".
- Learn about advanced formatting: create and use styles.
- Use Word's outlining features: outline view and outline lists.
- Extend document control: paragraph controls, section breaks and columns.
- Automate tasks with fields: build tables of contents, insert a document title in multiple places and create phone list headings.
- Customize Word: create your own toolbars and shortcuts.
- Create custom task routines: record and use macros.
